NatureWorks Park, located at 108 Bedford St, Hollidaysburg, is a unique space open from 8:00am to 8:00pm, seven days a week. The Blair County Conservation District owns the park, which is positioned along the Beaverdam Branch of the Juniata River. This river flows about six miles from its headwaters to its confluence with the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River. The entire length of Beaverdam Branch is listed as impaired, as well as three of its tributaries: Mill Run, Sugar Run, and Burgoon Run. These tributaries all flow into Beaverdam Branch at its headwaters.
The park is home to the American Sycamore tree, a wetland tree variety native to Pennsylvania. This deciduous and wide-canopied tree can grow up to 100 ft tall. The bark of older trunks tends to scale off revealing a smooth inner bark of lighter shade. The American Sycamore is a shade-loving tree, and its trunk has the largest diameter of all native trees.
NatureWorks Park offers a variety of activities and events for visitors of all ages. Educational signage enlightens visitors on topics like wetlands, urban agriculture, stormwater and many more. Scheduled programs hosted by District Staff provide hands-on learning experiences. Two pavilions are located at the park, ample size to accommodate from 24 to 120 people, making it a perfect venue for gatherings, classes, or get-togethers. The park also offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for groups or individuals to dedicate their time and talents.
The educational programs at NatureWorks Park are designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature. The park offers a range of programs, including the Annual Water Festival in April and May, which educates attendees about watersheds, water quality, and stream health. Another program, “Bees, Birds, and Butterflies!” in May and June, teaches about the importance of native plants for pollinators and local wildlife.
