From Historic Landmark to Modern Office: How Lehman Engineers Transformed the Olde Farm
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In the heart of Duncansville, a historic property has undergone a remarkable transformation. The Olde Farm Home, a Georgian-style home dating back to the 1790s, has evolved into a modern professional office complex, housing one of the region’s most respected engineering firms, Lehman Engineers.

As the first settlers of the land where the Olde Farm Home stands, the Fetter family witnessed the events of the Revolutionary War. In 1777, they constructed Fort Fetter on the property, a fortified structure that served throughout the American Revolutionary War for the defense of the local settlers of this part of Bedford County against Indian incursions. The Fetter family began the construction of the present house, which dates from the 1790s. Their legacy is still evident today, with the Fort Fetter Monument standing on the site once occupied by Fort Fetter. The Fetter family’s contributions to the area’s history are an integral part of the rich tapestry that makes up the story of the Olde Farm Home and Duncansville. This eastern section of the Olde Farm Home is Georgian style, displaying the common Georgian features of balance and symmetry. In the mid 1830s, following the construction of the Portage Railroad, a Greek Revival addition was attached to the western side of the home. This annex also displays typical features of Greek Revival architecture, being beautifully symmetrical and simplicity and purity.

In 1898, the Olde Farm Home and property was sold to Colonel John Vipond. The property remained in the Vipond family until 1985. Colonel John Vipond was a prominent figure in the history of the Olde Farm Home. He was a local banker, contractor, and well-known horseman. The property remained in the Vipond family until 1985. His tenure at the Olde Farm Home marked a significant period in the property’s history, contributing to its rich heritage and unique character. The legacy of Colonel John Vipond continues to be a part of the Olde Farm Home’s story, adding a layer of intrigue and historical significance to this modern office complex.

In 1985, Joe Lehman, Sr., purchased the property for conversion into a professional office complex with luxury office suites, known as the Olde Farm Office Centre. Lehman found the need to increase the availability of professional office suites in Duncansville, thus came the addition added in 1988.

Today, the Olde Farm Office Centre is home to Lehman Engineers, a firm known for its wide range of professional services, including transportation and structural design, site development, surveying, environmental compliance studies, and more. The building continues to hold much of its original architectural design.

Lehman Engineers, officially known as P. Joseph Lehman, Inc., Consulting Engineers, has a long-standing reputation for engineering excellence and client satisfaction. Over the years, the firm has worked on major projects including residential developments, recreation areas, shopping complexes, and airport facilities.

Some of their stand out projects include the US 22 Frankstown Intersection, Academia Covered Bridge, Hyndman Borough Flood Wall, and the Leap the Dips Roller Coaster. They have also provided environmental solutions for Sheetz, Inc. for a site in Cumberland, MD, and Scotts Sporting Goods. Lehman Engineers’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life in the local area through sound, innovative, and responsible engineering and environmental solutions is a testament to their dedication and expertise. Their accomplishments have not only shaped the local landscape but also contributed significantly to the community’s development and prosperity.

The Olde Farm Office Centre is not just home to Lehman Engineers, but also houses other businesses and offices. The building offers ground floor commercial office space, with multiple units available. The building’s excellent visibility from Route 22, ample parking, and beautiful grounds make it an attractive location for various businesses.

The transformation of the Olde Farm Home from a historic landmark to a modern office is a testament to the respect for history and progress in Duncansville. It stands as a symbol of the community’s past and its vibrant present, housing a company that is passionate about enhancing the quality of life by delivering sound and innovative engineering and environmental solutions.

The Olde Farm Office Centre, with its rich history and modern utility, truly embodies the spirit of Duncansville.
